Austin, Texas…the world’s live music capital. There is always something going on in this city, which has over 250 live music venues distributed across it. Aside from the legendary music scene, Austin offers a plethora of other distinctive activities. Learn the Texas Two Step, queue for some of the best BBQs in the country, or watch millions of bats soar through the skies at nightfall.

1. DANCE THE TEXAS TWO STEP
Put your cowboy boots on and head out for a night of dancing. There are various sites in town where you may dance the Texas Two Step, including the White Horse and Poodies Roadhouse. You don’t know how to do the Two Steps? No worries. Make your way over to the Broken Spoke.
2. SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS
This Austin neighborhood has a funky atmosphere. This is one of the nicest, hippest areas in town, with boutique stores, nightclubs, and a few fantastic restaurants. Drink at Hotel San Jose, eat at Hopdoddy, and don’t forget about Amy’s Ice Cream. The Gypsy Wagon, an unusual shop stocked with one-of-a-kind items, home goods, and clothing, was our favorite.
3. LADY BIRD LAKE
Lady Bird Lake is a reservoir on the Colorado River located in the middle of Austin. You may rent paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks from Zilker Metropolitan Park and spend several hours cruising up and down Lady Bird Lake. This is the ideal activity for a hot, sunny Austin day. The Hike-and-Bike Trail, which is around Lady Bird Lake for 10 miles, is also ideal for a stroll, jog, or bicycle ride.
4. AUSTIN’S SWIMMING HOLES
Cool yourself in one of Austin’s swimming holes throughout the summer. Barton Springs Pool is in Zilker Metropolitan Park in Austin. This huge, natural pool features a diving board and plenty of sun loungers. We’d heard excellent things about Hamilton Pool Preserve, and they only sell a limited number of tickets to keep crowds to a least. They were sold out for the next two weeks at the beginning of June. When the weather is particularly warm, this swimming hole may also close due to excessive bacteria levels.
5. BATS TAKE TO THE SKY
Every night, millions of bats fly out from beneath the South Congress Bridge and into the sky. We arrived at 8 p.m. and took a location on the south side of the South Congress Bridge. During the next 45 minutes, the bridge was with curious tourists like us, and kayaks and small cruise boats arrived on Lady Bird Lake. Sunset occurred at 8:30 p.m., and the bats appeared at about 8:50 p.m. Tim and I pictured thousands of bats spilling out of the bridge and filling the sky. They instead dispersed in a thin stream at the far end of the bridge. We could make out their shadows in the distance as they appeared in the sky.
6. GO BAR HOPPING
Austin features various neighborhoods that are well-known for their late-night scene. Sixth Street is reminiscent of Bourbon Street in New Orleans. It is a popular path for college students in the late night hours. Rainey Street is yet another unique Austin neighborhood. If you don’t want the noisy, dance club ambiance, there are several mellower spots and fantastic eateries nearby. Banger’s had the finest sausages we’d ever had and over 100 beers on tap. East Sixth Street is becoming popular. This was suggested to us by Austin natives we met in line at Franklin Barbecue, but Tim and I were for time and never made it out this way.
